Madhyama Āgama 3 — nagaropamasūktam — The Simile of the (Frontier) City
madhyamāgamasūtraṃ tṛtīyam - nagaropamasūktam
evaṃ mayā śrutam. ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīj jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme.
tasmin samaye bhagavān bhikṣūn avocat: “tadyathā bhikṣavo rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ saptabhir vastubhiḥ samanvāgataṃ bhavati, caturṇām āhārāṇāṃ prabhūtalābhibhir akṛcchralābhibhir bhavati. tatkāraṇāt tad rājanagaraṃ na śakyate bāhyaiḥ pratyarthikaiḥ pratyamitraiḥ parābhavituṃ, anyatrādhyātmikād upadravāt.
“katamaiḥ saptabhir vastubhiḥ samanvāgataṃ bhavati? tadyathā, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare aṭṭālako māpito bhavati, khātā ca bhūmir dṛḍhābhedyā kṛtā, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ prathamaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare parikhā khātā bhavati, atyarthaṃ gambhīrā vipulā ca, susaṃskṛtā sapratiśaraṇā ca, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ dvitīyaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare samantād anuparyāyapathaḥ śodhito bhavati samaḥ pṛthuś ca, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ tṛtīyaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare caturṅgiṇī senā saṃnipatitā bhavati, tadyathā hastikāyo 'śvakāyo rathakāyaḥ pattikāyaś ca, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ caturthaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare nānāvidham āyudhaṃ pratyupasthitaṃ bhavati, tadyathā dhanūṃṣi śarāḥ prāsāḥ paṭṭiśāś ca, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ pañcamaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare mahādauvārikaḥ sthāpito bhavati paṇḍito vyakto medhāvī śūro dhīraḥ kṛtopāyaḥ, sa kalyāṇān praveśayati pāpakān nivārayati, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ ṣaṣṭhaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare prākāro māpito bhavati uccatayā udviddhaḥ atyarthaṃ dṛḍhaḥ, mṛtsudhālepanaiḥ susaṃskṛtaḥ, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. idaṃ saptamaṃ vastu yena rājanagaraṃ samanvāgataṃ bhavati.
“kathaṃ rājanagaraṃ caturṇām āhārāṇāṃ prabhūtānāṃ lābhi bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhi? tadyathā rājñaḥ pratyantanagare udakatṛṇakāṣṭhopakaraṇāni pratyupasthitāni bhavanti, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. ayam prathama āhāro yena rājanagaraṃ prabhūtalābhi bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhi.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare prabhūtaḥ śāliḥ saṃgṛhīto bhavati yavaś ca saṃnicitaḥ, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. ayaṃ dvitīya āhāro yena rājanagaraṃ prabhūtalābhi bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhi.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare prabhūtā māṣā upacitā bhavanti mudgā mahāmudgāś ca, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. ayaṃ tṛtīya āhāro yena rājanagaraṃ prabhūtalābhi bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhi.
punar aparam, rājñaḥ pratyantanagare sarpistailaṃ madhvikṣuphāṇitaṃ matsyaṃ lavaṇaṃ vallūraṃ cety asya sarvasya pratyupasthitaṃ bhavati, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. ayaṃ caturtha āhāro yena rājanagaraṃ prabhūtalābhi bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhi.
evam rājanagaraṃ saptabhir vastubhiḥ samanvāgataṃ bhavati, caturṇām āhārāṇāṃ prabhūtānāṃ lābhi bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhi. na śakyate bāhyaiḥ pratyarthikaiḥ parābhavituṃ, anyatrādhyātmikād upadravāt.
evam eva yady āryaśrāvakaḥ saptabhiḥ saddharmaiḥ samanvāgato bhavati, caturṇām ābhicetasikānāṃ sukhavihārāṇām lābhī bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhiḥ, ataḥ kāraṇād āryaśrāvako na pāpīyasā māreṇāvatāraṃ labhate, nāpi pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ sahanugacchati. na saṃkleśaiḥ saṃkliśyate, na punarbhavāya pratyājāyate.
katamaiḥ saptabhiḥ saddharmaiḥ samanvāgato bhavati? tadyathā āryaśrāvakaḥ śraddhāvān bhavati dṛḍhaśraddhas tathāgate saktamanāḥ. tasya śraddhendriyaṃ pratiṣṭhitaṃ bhavati yad aśakyaṃ hārayituṃ śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacid vā punar loke. idam āryaśrāvakasya prathamaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvako nityam hrīmān bhavati, lajjitavye lajjate, lajjate pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ saṃkleśikaiḥ kleśair duḥkhavipākair jātisaṃsāramūlakāraṇaiḥ. idam āryaśrāvakasya dvitīyaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvako nityaṃ vyapatrāpī bhavati, vyapatrapitavye vyapatrapate, vyapatrapate pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ saṃkleśikaiḥ kleśair duḥkhavipākair jātisaṃsāramūlakāraṇaiḥ. idam āryaśrāvakasya tṛtīyaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvako nityam ārabdhavīryo viharati. akuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇāya, kuśalānāṃ dharmāṇām upasaṃpadāya. nityam utpannacchandaḥ, ekāgraḥ, dṛḍhaparakramaḥ, kuśalamūlānām anikṣiptadhuraḥ. idam āryaśrāvakasya caturthaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvako bahuśruto bhavati śrutadharo 'saṃpramuṣitaḥ śrutasaṃnicayo bahuśrutaḥ. ye te dharmā ādaukalyāṇā madhyekalyāṇā antakalyāṇāḥ sārthāḥ savyañjanāḥ kevalaparipūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ brahmacaryam abhivadanti. tathārūpā asya dharmā bahuśrutā bhavanti dhṛtā vacasā paricitā sahasrakṛtvaḥ manasānuvīkṣitā dṛṣṭyā supratividdhāḥ. idam āryaśrāvakasya pañcamaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvako nityaṃ smṛtimān bhavati. paramayā smṛtinipakeṇasamanvāgato dīrgharātrakṛtam api dīrgharātrabhāṣitam api smaraty anusmarati. idam āryaśrāvakasya ṣaṣṭhaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvakaḥ prajñāṃ bhāvayati. udayavyayadharmānupaśyī bhavati evarūpayā jñānāryaprajñayā samanvāgataḥ prabhedanayayā samyagduḥkhakṣayagāminyā. idam āryaśrāvakasya saptamaṃ saddharmalābhaḥ.
“katamāṃś catura ābhicetasikān lābhī bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhiḥ? tadyathā, āryaśrāvako vivicyaiva kāmair vivicya pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idam āryaśrāvakasya prathamam ābhicetasikaṃ yad akṛcchreṇa labhate.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvako vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamād adhyātmasaṃprasādāc cetasa ekotībhāvād avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idaṃ dvitīyam ābhicetasikaṃ yad akṛcchreṇa labhate.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvakaḥ prīteś ca virāgād upekṣako viharaty nispṛhaḥ. smṛtaḥ samprajānan sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayati yat tad āryā ācakṣate 'upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī śūnyam' iti niṣprītikaṃ tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idaṃ tṛtīyam ābhicetasikaṃ yad akṛcchreṇa labhate.
punar aparam, āryaśrāvakaḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇād duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvam eva ca saumanasyadaurmanasyayor astaṅgamād aduḥkham asukham upekṣāsmṛtipariśuddhaṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idaṃ caturtham ābhicetasikaṃ yad akṛcchreṇa labhate.
evam āryaśrāvakaḥ saptabhiḥ saddharmaiḥ samanvāgato bhavati, caturṇām ābhicetasikānāṃ sukhavihārāṇām lābhī bhavaty akṛcchralābhy akasiralābhiḥ. na pāpīyasā māreṇāvatāraṃ labhate, nāpi pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ sahanugacchati. na saṃkleśaiḥ saṃkliśyate, na punarbhavāya pratyājāyate.
tadyathā rājñaḥ pratyantanagare aṭṭālako māpito bhavati, khātā ca bhūmir dṛḍhābhedyā kṛtā, antarbhūtānāṃ yogakṣemāya bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ nigrahāya. evam evāryaśrāvakaḥ śraddhāvān bhavati dṛḍhaśraddhas tathāgate saktamanāḥ. tasya śraddhendriyaṃ pratiṣṭhitaṃ bhavati yad aśakyaṃ hārayituṃ śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacid vā punar loke. idam asya śraddhāṭṭālako bhavati yena pāpakān akuśalān dharmān prajahāti, kuśalān dharmān bhāvayati.
