evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śākyeṣu viharati sma kapilavastuni nyagrodhārāme .
atha khalu bhagavān pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya kapilavastuṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat . kapilavastuni piṇḍāya caritvā paścādbhaktam piṇḍapātapratikrāntaḥ mahāvanaṃ upasaṃcakrāma divāvihārāya . mahāvanam avagāhya bailvayaṣṭikāyāḥ mūle divāvihāraṃ nyaṣīdat .
daṇḍapāṇiḥ api khalu śākyaḥ jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkramamāṇaḥ anuvicaramāṇaḥ mahāvanaṃ upasaṃcakrāma . mahāvanam avagāhya bailvayaṣṭikāyāṃ bhagavantaṃ upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya daṇḍam avalambya ekānte atiṣṭhat . ekānte sthitaḥ khalu daṇḍapāṇiḥ śākyaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — kiṃvādī śramaṇaḥ kimākhyāyī iti ?
yathāvādī khalu, āyuṣman, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake saśramaṇabrāhmaṇyāṃ prajāyāṃ sadevamanuṣyāyāṃ na kenacit loke vigṛhya tiṣṭhati, yathā ca punaḥ kāmaiḥ visaṃyuktaṃ viharantaṃ taṃ brāhmaṇam akathaṃkathiṃ chinnakaukṛtyaṃ bhavābhavayoḥ vītatṛṣṇaṃ saṃjñāḥ na anuśerate — evaṃvādī khalu aham, āyuṣman, evamākhyāyī iti .
evam ukte, daṇḍapāṇiḥ śākyaḥ śīrṣam avakampya, jihvāṃ niṣkāsya, trivaliṃ lalāṭe utthāpya daṇḍam avalambya prākramat .

idam avocat bhagavān . idam uktvā sugataḥ utthāya āsanāt vihāraṃ prāvikṣat .
atha khalu teṣāṃ bhikṣūṇām aciraprakrāntasya bhagavataḥ etad abhūt — idaṃ khalu naḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavān saṃkṣiptena uddeśam uddiśya, vistāreṇa arthaṃ avibhajya, utthāya āsanāt vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ — yatonidānam, bhikṣo, puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti . atra cet na asti abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasitavyam . eṣaḥ eva antaḥ rāgānuśayānām … atra ete pāpakāḥ akuśalāḥ dharmāḥ apariśeṣāḥ nirudhyante iti . kaḥ nu khalu asya bhagavatā saṃkṣiptena uddeśasya uddiṣṭasya vistāreṇa artham avibhaktasya vistāreṇa arthaṃ vibhajet iti ?

tadyathā api, āyuṣmantaḥ, puruṣaḥ sārārthikaḥ sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇaṃ caramāṇaḥ mahataḥ vṛkṣasya tiṣṭhataḥ sāravataḥ mūlaskandhau atikramya , śākhāpalāśayoḥ sāraṃ paryeṣitavyaṃ manyeta ; evaṃsaṃpadam idam āyuṣmatāṃ śāstari sammukhībhūte, taṃ bhagavantam atisṛtya, asmān etam arthaṃ pratipraṣṭavyaṃ manyadhve . saḥ hi, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavān jānan jānāti, paśyan paśyati, cakṣurbhūtaḥ jñānabhūtaḥ dharmabhūtaḥ brahmabhūtaḥ, vaktā pravaktā, arthasya nirnetā, amṛtasya dātā, dharmasvāmī tathāgataḥ . saḥ ca eva punar etasya kālaḥ abhūt, yad bhagavantam eva etam arthaṃ pratipṛccheta . yathā vaḥ bhagavān vyākuryāt tathā enaṃ dhārayeta iti .

evam, āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ mahākātyāyanasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ etad avocat —

cakṣuḥ ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, pratītya rūpāṇi ca utpadyate cakṣurvijñānam, trayāṇāṃ saṃgatiḥ sparśaḥ, sparśapratyayā vedanā, yad vedayate tat saṃjānīte, yat saṃjānīte tat vitarkayati, yat vitarkayati tat prapañcayati, yat prapañcayati tatonidānaṃ puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti atītānāgatapratyutpanneṣu cakṣurvijñeyeṣu rūpeṣu .

saḥ vata, āyuṣmantaḥ, cakṣuṣi sati rūpeṣu satsu cakṣurvijñāne sati sparśaprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyati iti — sthānam etad vidyate . sparśaprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ vedanāprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyati iti — sthānam etad vidyate . vedanāprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ saṃjñāprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyati iti — sthānam etad vidyate . saṃjñāprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ vitarkaprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyati iti — sthānam etad vidyate . vitarkaprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāsamudācaraṇaprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyati iti — sthānam etad vidyate .

paṇḍitaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, mahākātyāyanaḥ ; mahāprajñaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, mahākātyāyanaḥ . mām cet api yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, etam arthaṃ pratipṛccheta, aham api tam evam eva vyākuryāṃ yathā tat mahākātyāyanena vyākṛtam . eṣaḥ ca eva etasya arthaḥ . evaṃ ca enaṃ dhārayata iti .
evam ukte, āyuṣmān ānandaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — tadyathā api, bhadanta, puruṣaḥ jighatsādaurbalyābhyāṃ parītaḥ madhupiṇḍikām adhigacchet, saḥ yataḥ yataḥ svādayet, labheta eva svādurasam asecanakam .
evam eva khalu, bhadanta, cetasaḥ bhikṣuḥ dravyajātikaḥ, yataḥ yataḥ asya dharmaparyāyasya prajñayā artham upaparīkṣeta, labheta eva āttamanatām, labheta eva cetasaḥ prasādam . kaḥ nāma ayaṃ, bhadanta, dharmaparyāyaḥ iti ?
tasmāt iha tvam, ānanda, imaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ madhupiṇḍikaparyāyaḥ iti eva enaṃ dhāraya iti .
idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanāḥ āyuṣmān ānandaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandat .
madhupiṇḍikasūtraṃ niṣṭhitam aṣṭamam .
